Hello, my name is Ben Tilton. I work as a licensed clinical psychologist in Huntington Beach, California, and have earned distinction as a Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Association for meeting stringent requirements in areas of knowledge, skill, education, training, and experience in the therapeutic process.
Having started my practice in Huntington Beach in 2004, I devote my time and energy in helping my clients lead more fulfilling lives from the first time they visit my office. I enjoy working with all age groups, and specialize in helping clients deal with grief and loss issues, addictions (alcohol, drugs, sex), Attention-deficit disorder, and mood disorders. I excel at helping my clients enhance their self-esteem, appropriately work through losses, increase self-care skills, decrease anxiety, and communicate effectively in all relationships.
Prior to entering private practice on a full-time basis, I worked at Santa Ana College with students with psychological disabilities, providing academic accommodations and support in facilitating successful academic careers. I aquired specialized training and experience in addictions at Alternative Options in Cerritos, working with both adults and adolescents in the intensive outpatient chemical dependency program.
I also worked at Cal State Fullerton for a total of 3 years, counseling students with depression, anxiety, grief/loss issues, family problems, relationship issues, alcohol or substance abuse problems, acculturation issues, gender identity issues, sexual orientation issues, Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, men's issues, low self-esteem, and academic concerns.
During my tenure at Cal State Fullerton, I trained resident advisors on how to deal with students in emotional distress, and how to identify potentially suicidal students and refer them for appropriate assistance. I also offered a number of workshops to students, faculty, and staff. I particularly enjoyed facilitating relaxation in "Melt Away Stress" workshops, in which I implemented a multitude of relaxation strategies, including progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and diaphragmatic breathing.
Concerning my mentoring experience, I taught a grauduate course at Cal State Fullerton for student's gaining practical experience conducting psychotherapy at various sites throughout Orange County. I have also supervised graduate students in their clinical work and post-graduates obtaining hours toward licensure as a psychologist, social worker, or marriage and family therapist.
Outside of Cal State Fullerton, I have presented to community agencies in both Orange and Los Angeles Counties on ways to add balance and energy to one's life.
I graduated from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Chicago Campus in 2002, as a doctor of Clinical Psychology. My training included working in hospital, university, and residential settings. More specifically, I have worked with veterans at the VA hospital in Chicago, children and adolescents in the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago, and adults of all ages at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Loyola University Chicago, and California State University, Fullerton.
Please do contact me with any questions you have. If you would like to communicate confidentially with me, I ask that you leave a message on my voicemail with best times to reach you.
